Solve numerical problem from Boyle's law.

Q. The volume of a given mass of gas is 20 L at 20°C under a pressure of 5 pascals. What will be the volume of the gas at the same temperature (20°C) when the pressure is reduced to 2 pascals?

Solution:

Given:

  • Initial volume, V₁ = 20 L
  • Initial pressure, P₁ = 5 Pa
  • Final pressure, P₂ = 2 Pa
  • Temperature remains constant (T₁ = T₂ = 20°C)

To Find: Final volume (V₂)

Using Boyle’s Law:

P₁ × V₁ = P₂ × V₂

Substitute the values:

5 × 20 = 2 × V₂
100 = 2 × V₂
V₂ = 100 / 2 = 50 L

Answer: The final volume of the gas is 50 liters.
