Q. The volume of a gas is 1092 cc at STP. Find the volume of the gas at a temperature of 180°C and a pressure of 76 cm Hg.

Solution:

Given:

  • Initial volume, V1 = 1092 cc
  • Initial temperature, T1 = 0°C = 273 K
  • Initial pressure, P1 = 76 cm Hg (standard pressure)
  • Final temperature, T2 = 180°C = 273 + 180 = 453 K
  • Final pressure, P2 = 76 cm Hg

Since pressure remains constant (P1 = P2), we apply **Charles's Law**:

V1 / T1 = V2 / T2

Substituting values:

1092 / 273 = V2 / 453
V2 = (1092 × 453) / 273 = 1812 cc

Answer:

The volume of the gas at 180°C and 76 cm Hg is 1812 cc.
